| helped save several lives |
- Three people were drowned in Victoria at the weekend, bringing the death toll by drowning to ten in six days - a record for a non-holiday week.
Seven people including four children, were saved from the sea. The other three were men whose dinghy was swamped, off mordialloc.
One of the drowning victims was an 18-year-old youth who was with the three men - two of them his brothers - in the dinghy.
The youth, Robert Thomas, of Alex- ander parade, Melbourne, sank seconds before a rescue launch arrived.
His brothers, Graham, 21, and Brian, 23, were only semi-conscious when picked up.
The other man; Keith Doherty, 27, also of Alexander parade, had ceased to breathe, but was revived by artificial respiration.
The three survivors owe their lives to the fact that the Mordialloc Motor Yacht Club was holding a race nearby-and the commodore discarded normal race procedure by glancing seawards instead of watching the handicapper.
The four men were plunged into the sea at about noon, when choppy waves swamped their hired 10-foot boat nearly a mile off-shore.
Brian Thomas, a non swimmer, stayed with the capsized dinghy as the other men struck out for the shore to get help.
Robert Thomas was soon struggling frantically to keep afloat. Keith Doherty tried to support him as he fought towards the beach.
The men had been struggling for 20 minutes when Mr. Keith Glenister, Mordialloc club commodore, saw them.
No sign of his mate
Mr. Glenister signalled to the other boats to join him, and sped towards Doherty.
Doherty, before collapsing, gasped: "The boat's over-turned-I've a maté with me."
But there was no sign of Robert Thomas. I
Brian and Graham Thomas were rescued by other launches.
