- GAOL TRAGEDY
CRONIN INSANE MURDER ACQUITTAL
COOTAMUNDRA Wednesday.
AT the Supreme Court to-day, Lawrence Angelo Cronin was charged before Mr. Justice Halse Rogers and a Jury with having, on Sunday, murdered Walter Hunter in Cootamundra Gaol, and was acquitted on the ground of insanity.
Dr. Henry said that Cronin realised what he had done, but had no normal realisation that it was wrong. He said he had to do it. because Hunter was going to poison him. In answer to Mr. Curtis, for Cronin, Dr. Henry said he had a definite opinio n that Cronin, at the time of the stabbing, would not know right from wrong. Dr. Maxwell gave similar evidence.
JUDGE'S ADVICE.
Neither the Crown Prosecutor, Mr. H. L. Moors, nor Mr. Curtis addressed the Jury, the latter contending that there could be no other advice to the Jury than that the man was Insane when he committed the crime. The Judge advised the Jury to retur n a verdict of not guilty, and leave it to the Crown to deal with Cronin. The Jury returned a verdict of "not guilty on the grounds of Insanity," and the Judge directed that Cronin be kept in strict custody in Cootamundra Gaol pending the Govern or's pleasure. On a charge of having maliciously wounded John Baker, at Hillston, with Intent to do bodily harm, Cronln was remanded for trial.
