1416 On his move to Pakenham George acquired 122 acres of land, later he took up 174 acres under the Nicholson Act.

(The Nicholson Act)
In the late 1850s, much of the best land in what are now the eastern states of Australia was under the control of the squatters, who became Australia’s own landed gentry. The squatters’ runs were often vast, with more land being held by lease or licence under the 1847 Order than the total area of France or Spain or Great Britain.
But Australians couldn’t eat wool. The need to encourage more people to farm a variety of produce led, in the 1860s, to the various Land Acts, allowing farmers to select and purchase land, eating into the squatters’ leaseholds. The intent was to allow people of limited means to acquire land. In Victoria, settlers paid for half of an allotment upfront at a fixed price of £1 per acre and paid rent on the other half for usually seven years, paying the balance of the purchase price at the end of that period to obtain title to the land.

1429 On Thursday morning, when returning home from the Dandenong Races, a man named George Ritchie, of Lyndhurst, was killed. From the. evidence given at the inquiry held before Mr. H.M. Sutherland, it appears that deceased was under the influence of liquor, and that he and an acquaintance were walking their horses, when deceased said "Let's have a canter." The other demurred, as the place, was rough, but Ritohie started off, saying he-liked it all the better for being rough. . He had barely gone 100 yards before he fell on to the metal on his head, which was fatally cut, and he did not speak after he fell.

FATAL ACCIDENT ON THE CRANBOURNE ROAD
A fatal accident occurred near the Eumemmerring Creek bridge on Thurs-day morning last, between the hours of twelve and one a.m., by which a farmer named George Ritchie, residing at Lyndhurst, lost his life. It appears that he had been at Hennessy's races and had imbibed, rather freely during the day. On leaving for home he was accompanied by Mr. Geo.Howard, and challenged that gentleman to race with him. He then galloped forward, and when some little distance ahead his horse fell and he was pitched on his head on to the metal, sustaining concussion to the brain, which caused his death. A magisterial enquiry was held on the same day at Taylor's Half-way House Hotel by H.M Sutherland, Esq. to enquire into cause of death, and the following evidence elicited and verdict given :-George Howard deposed that he was in company with the deceased on, the night of the 26th inst.at the Eumemmerring Hotel where races had been held. Left for home at twelve o'clock, and as they proceeded the de-ceased requested him to race. Refused, and asked him to ride steady. Deceased then started ahead of him, and when near the Eumemmerring bridge heard a noise on the metal as if a horse had fallen. On coming up found the deceased lying on the road. Got off his horse to lift him up, and spoke to him but got no answer. Did everything he could to restore him but without avail. Then moved him to the side of the road and went for assistance to Mr. Green's. Deceased was not sober. Mr. Thomas Green came back with him and found the deceased in the same state. A few minutes after it could be seen he was dead.-Thomas Green deposed that on the morning of the 27th December he was called on by George Howard who said that a man was lying on the road, and asked him to bring some water and a candle. Went down and found deceased lying on the side of the road, and after he had looked at him by aid of the candle suggested that he should go for a doctor, but before leaving thought deceased was dead. Went for the doctor whom he found was not at home. Then returned and helped to con-vey the body to Taylor's Hotel. -Constable A. J. Falkiner deposed that he was called at three o'clock on the morning of the 27th December by Mr. Thos. Green, who informed him that George Ritchie had fallen from his horse at the Eumemmerring Creek bridge and was lying on the side of the road. Went at once and found the deceased with his head much bruised, and the marks of blood on the road metal. The stirrup iron and leather lay a few yards from him. The horse was about a quarter of a mile from the body and had the reins about his feet. Had the body removed to Taylor's hotel. -A verdict was given to the effect that the deceased had met with his death on the morning of the 27th December by accidentally falling from his horse whilst in a state of intoxication.
